Shard 4
✩ getting into PANDORA
Retrieved: Day 146 - Lilith
episode 11; 0:13-10:30
bullet-point narrative:
- on a bus, heading toward the massive wall in the middle of Tokyo--the Hell's Gate
- "Do you believe the urban legend? About how you can get back something you've lost within the Gate? But that you have to pay a commensurate price for it? ... I wonder what the price is."
- he doesn't believe it at all
- but he talks with the woman ("Corinna Moku") sitting next to him a bit, introducing himself as "Li Shengshun"
- . . . the Gate is MASSIVE
- Physical quantity Alternation Natural Deconstruction Organized Research Agency
- he was sent here to infiltrate it by the Syndicate
- while going through the rigorous testings and questions for securing a position within the facility, he thinks over the mission and what was said
- the older man tells him the mission is to get into the facility
- the cat seems to think this is a crazy idea
- "That place is right next to the Gate. When a contractor gets near a hotspot, there is a risk of them losing control."
- old man doesn't seem to care that much. it's not really his job to care.
- cat doubts Hei could even get past the security checks
- "Still, the Syndicate is serious." again, not old man's job to care. just do what he's told by the Syndicate
- asking what it is they want him to do and getting the explanation that it's a recovery mission
- apparently, there'd been an explosion at the facility that was originally thought to be an accident until they discovered something was missing. an operative of the CIA took something from within the Gate called a "Meteor Fragment"
- the Syndicate believes the Fragment is still within PANDORA facilities
- and Hei's supposed to bring it outside of the facility once he's recovered it
- "Don't worry," the old man says before slipping a matchbox over. Inside is a very thin patch. "You just need to do as you're told. Just like you always do."
- flashback over, getting asked personality/informational questions and tested to see if he's lying about something. he lies well enough to fool the monitors into thinking he's telling the truth
- or maybe it has something to do with the patch on his neck
- either way...
- done with the screening process, he's in line to get past a checkpoint and runs into "Corinna" again
- ... she. doesn't seem to be doing to well, looking paranoid and afraid of something that isn't there
- she yells at him when he tries to make sure she's okay
- and the security prevent her from continuing on through the checkpoint, tazing her when she resists
- . . . g-goes through the checkpoint
- and is made into a janitor
- with a manager who apparently thinks janitorial duties are the single-most important thing? or maybe that's just the mindset of a culture where every person is expected to treat their job 100% like it's the most important? whatever.
- while getting a tour of the facility and being told what rooms to clean and such, he spots a room with telescopes
- . . . such nostalgia
- and gets in trouble with the manager
- "You don't need to clean that room." "Huh? Why not?" "The guy in charge of that room is a nuisance."
- apparently, they're blocking traffic to one of the labs
- manager yanks him out of the way (as if it was his fault) and they wait for the scientists to pass by
- but a woman crashes into him and drops her folders and papers
- ... more scolding from the manager
- and helping the woman pick up her things
- while she slips a note into his pocket...
- "Equipment room A-3 in 1 hour," says the note
- she's an operative from the Syndicate
- they stand on opposite sides of an aisle in the equipment room, talking about current situation and what to expect
- there are more Syndicate operatives in the facility but she doesn't know who they are
- "There is one thing I'd like to tell you up front. Please do not expect anything from me."
- she goes onto explain that she's just here for the research and as this is her first time infiltrating for the Syndicate, she has no idea what to do.
- she's been doing this for 2 years
- "Relax. I won't expect anything from you."
- . . . more of a statement of how he doesn't need to rely on anyone than it is about her, tbh
- tries to get more info about the Meteor Fragment but she doesn't seem to know much about that, either.
- "Just that a similar substance was identified in South America, too, before it disappeared. Given the data on it at the time, it's thought that it would be an extremely useful item in unraveling the mysteries of the Gate."
- ... it's no exaggeration. it's common knowledge that a large area in South America has "disappeared". no one can go past a certain point. no one knows how that happened.
- Hei might know, or have an idea, but that's not in this shard. but it's like a niggling piece of information at the tip of the tongue
- and the woman doesn't know why the CIA would be after the Fragment
- she takes her leave only to come back to introduce herself
- "Meena Kandaswamy"
- "Also, that seal... there really isn't any point to it. There isn't actually any way to spot a contractor."
- he takes the seal off his neck...
- and she's gone
