IC INFORMATION
Character Name: "Hei"
Canon: Darker Than Black
Character Background: Twelve years ago, the real sky was replaced by a fake one and two Gates appeared in South America and Japan--the Heaven and Hell Gates. The stars changed from twinkles of light to being signs of the lives of the people who gained special abilities who are driven to "pay a price" each time they use said ability--contractors. Twelve years ago, Hei was just an older brother who looked after his little sister and would make wishes on falling stars. After everything changed, however, his sister became a contractor who would be enlisted in an organization in order to fight to "make all the stars fall"--kill as many contractors as possible. Hei himself joined in this war--known as the Heavens War--in order to protect his sister whose payment after use of her ability was to sleep for quite a while. The war ended after five years, and Hei's team--including his sister and the Heaven's Gate itself--vanished. Suddenly, he also had the ability to call upon special abilities, generating electricity, but without the need to pay the price to use it.
Fast forward five more years, and Hei is doing work for an organization known as the Syndicate, thought to be contractor and thus have no emotions except for rationality. All the while, he looks for any sign of his sister or of the teammate he believes has betrayed him. He works with an unlikely group--a man who appears to loathe contractors, a contractor who's lost his original body, and a doll who seems to have little to no independence--to carry out retrieval missions and assassinations--a large portion of them involving the Hell's Gate in Japan. Soon, it is revealed that Amber, the contractor operative who fought alongside Hei and sister and who Hei believes has betrayed him, is actively working toward an end of the real Heavens War--the attempted destruction of all contractors who came into being along with the Gates. In the end, Hei is forced to make a choice to either allow for this or to cause another event like with the Heaven's Gate which would result in the destruction of Japan and millions of people. It is revealed, however, that Hei's sister is not just missing but that she used her abilities--the ability to manipulate matter on a molecular level--to essentially fuse herself with Hei, explaining his own abilities. With these abilities and Amber's sacrifice of her life, Hei is able to chose a third route of going back into time to change the particle accelerator the Syndicate had planned to used to create the destruction of the Gate and its contractors.
Sadly, this isn't the end of the troubles at the Hell's Gate. With his group dead or missing, Hei escapes Japan with the doll--Yin--who quickly starts to exhibit more of a personality and individuality. A number of groups pursue them, wanting the doll for reasons not known to Hei until, quite suddenly, Yin and her spectre spirit begin to make contractors kill themselves--frequently at the hands of their own abilities. There is a being within Yin called Izanami that begins to awaken, calling for the destruction of contractors--something foretold in documents left from fifty years ago involving the beings Izanami and Izanagi meeting and destruction of the world. Realizing that killing contractors would, in fact, include Hei as well, Yin pleads with Hei to kill her only to be refused. Not wanting to kill who he believes is the only person left in the world he cares about, Hei refuses to kill the girl who was a doll. This inevitably results in Izanami awakening just long enough to slaughter a fair number of contractors before Yin is able to stop the awakening--and is captured by Section 3, remnants of the Syndicate. Hei, unaware of this, believes he has lost everything and ends up turning into quite the drunkard until a certain Madam Oreille decides to offer him a job with the CIA--with the extra tip that Yin is still alive and waiting for him to come to kill her before Izanami can awaken again.
Character personality: Believed to be a contractor by a number of people, Hei displays the mannerisms of one--a cold sort of personality and a focus on rationality and logic. This makes him come across as a very aloof character who doesn't seem to take any pleasure in his work, simply being efficient and quick to get it over with, and doesn't go looking for friends or allies. On the flipside, in order to get in close with targets and complete his missions, he occasionally has to venture out as a civilian, utilizing a friendly sort of personality of a clueless yet kindly thoughtful exchange student from China called Li Shengshun. The softer and more casual approach of Li is in direct opposition to his contractor persona, frequently called the Black Reaper--deceiving people long enough to not associate the two together.
However, the truth of the matter is both personalities are fakes. Hei is, in fact, not a true contractor due to him only obtaining his abilities thanks to his sister's actions; and therefore, he is left with very human emotions while carrying out the workload of a contractor.
Hei is very much a quieter sort of person who internalizes his emotions. He hates to kill but has done so even before he was a "contractor" in order to protect that which was closest to him--his sister Bai. This need to protect those around him continues to crop up even when he is working with other contractors, dolls, and civilians alike, frequently at direct odds with his missions resulting in him acting against what would be normal for a contractor. More than a bit irrational, Hei is also a bit of a hothead, his temper getting the better of him and causing him to lash out or act without thinking. His stubbornness is also very much at odds against what a contractor should be, as he will often be the one to go back for comrades or civilians who need to be rescued--even when logic dictates that they are probably better off killing them than saving them. Though he acts very much detached from events and people around him, Hei is someone who has a wry and dry sort of humor, often dark in context and deadpanned in tone. He takes small pleasures in things like eating more than a normal person should be allowed, but even with those, very rarely does he let an actual smile cross his face.
In the end, the real Hei is very much someone who still looks up at the sky, hoping to one day see the real stars again instead of the ones they have been given. A hopeless sort of pessimistic optimist.
Effects of memory loss: Without memories of the Heavens War and what he has done in his life as a "contractor", Hei will very much be a much more personable and gentle person. He will be a lot more easy to come to trust people around and a lot less prone to use violence as a solution. He will still be very much someone who gets attached to people and want to protect them by any means, but he will lose a lot of the trained mentality of a "contractor" and will likely let his emotions get the better of him much more frequently than he does with all of his memories. Though, without his memories and being told that his world may have ended, Hei will probably be distraught and confused, not understanding what could have possibly happened that his world would come to an end. He will probably find this to be a source of determination to do what is needed to bring it back, though his memories will probably determine just how far he's willing to go.
